I'm guessing I need to get a firewire external dvd drive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Either that or replace the internal optical drive. I think the external route might be easier if you don't relish looking for a compatible unit and dismantling the computer. Personally I'd look for a 5.25 FireWire enclosure and then install an IDE/PATA/ATA DVD drive inside it.
I'm sure you've got some disused ones laying around or know someone who does.
