I'm going to France for a week and i was wondering which settings should i apply on my iphone 4 so i can check my mail and social sites once or twice a day without running up my phone bill? Thanks.

If you must have incoming calls which will be expensive just turn off data and use wifi only for email and FB. If you don't want incoming calls put it in airplane mode and turn on wifi.
you can turn roaming data off and only use wifi to check your emails and stuff. however, for about $20 or less, you should be able to find a prepaid SIM that offers up to 5GB of data as well. thats what i did when i was in Iceland. $16 got me a prepaid SIM with 5GB of data. well worth it.
