So I have an original iPhone lying around. I've been using it as an iTunes remote (using the remote app) but it hasn't been smooth, so here's how I improved things:

- jail-broke it using jailbreakme.com
- installed nolockscreen to disable the lock screen (it's just a remote after all)
- installed backgrounder to force the remote app to run in the background
- installed insomnia to prevent the wifi from going to sleep

Now it's an iTunes remote that snaps to attention right away.
