I used 3rd party in my 08/09 iMac. A month later it died. Not sure you should drop that much on a 5 year old computer.

Which brand of RAM did you use? I would say investing money to keep an older computer going is always wise. As an example, I used an 8GB RAM kit from PNY for my 2009 20" iMac and it was great with no issues.

Not long after that, I bought a PowerMac G5 quad (for $200 including a 23" display) and paid about $200 for a 16GB RAM kit from OWC and it was beautiful. I replaced the stock HDD with a couple of extra 1 TB drives that I had and I had a nice RAIDED PM G5 quad doing amazing things that actually outperformed my 2009 iMac.

It's too bad I had to sell both of those.
