I wonder if its better to buy the base 13 with 8gb n upgrade to the 256ssd manually as I hear the standalones vs what apple uses run faster? not to mention my current ultimate thunderbolt air is fast enough lol. what are your thoughts? would save my about 100 bucks or so overall

I believe Apple just upgraded so that a) theirs is faster (than it used to be though perhaps not as fast as third party) and b) what you can get from other vendors now won't work. so if you are going this route be prepared to wait to upgrade until the vendors catch up (or buy the older design, but why would you?)

Apple upgraded to SATA III so their drives this update should be similar to the faster ones that OWC offered in the past. Unfortunately Apple modified the connector on the flash sticks so as it stands there exists no usable third-party SSD alternative for the 2012 MBA.
