Also, should one go directly to beta 2 or go to beta 1 and then go to Settings to update the phone? Which would be the best option, especially to keep the battery life proper?

I'm just going to do a OTA update, I did the same thing going to iOS beta 2.
 
I'm gonna do a OTA update if it says I need like 2gigs of space. Can I just download the ipsw file and update to beta 3 like that or will it say i'm on the latest?

If you download the file and push it with the ( shift Option ) button it will update it to the ipsw you downloaded..
