all of our devices (numerous iPhones & iPads) were set to automatic download of software updates but with auto install turned OFF.

Overnight iOS 26.2 has been downloaded and in doing so it has turned ON all of the auto-install buttons.

I have now turned off everything "auto" but fear that if I had not spotted it this morning all of the devices would have done the "install overnight" later on tonight.

What is Apple playing at?

This is very big brother - is there a threat we don't know about or is it just getting too big for its boots?

Oh, that’s terrible.
If I were you, I’d check all your devices every hour from now on, to make sure they don’t try and sneak it past you again. Plus some random checks in between.

Yep, my iPhone mini 12 blue (that I never use outside and stays in the house 24/7 now) updated automatically last time.
I need to log off every night on the iPad since everything 2025 is pure non-working evil.

they do this, Cupertino because most users forget or are to busy tiktoking-facetdeetin'
instead of phone maintenance all the time.
