I have been on Catalina 10.15.7 since last year. I’m using a MBP 16 inch, and connecting an external monitor over HDMI though an Anker usb-c hub. This setup has worked flawlessly, and never had any issues.

In the midst of working I accidentally hit update on that silly notification Apple has to send you every freaking day,
“update now or remind me later”, I instantly regretted it and tried to see if there’s an option to stop it.

The update screen starts and at that point I don’t want to stop it in case that would cause an issue.
Update finishes and I looked to see what was updated and it must have been a security update as I’m still on 10.15.7.

Unfortunately, now my HDMI connection will not work! To reiterate it worked flawlessly before,
then a security update gets installed, and now it won't work. Thanks a lot APPLE!

I’ve tried resetting the Nvram, detecting displays, unplugging, re-plugging, shutting down, etc
Tried connecting through different hubs, adapters, but it seems anything that utilizes HDMi will result in a blank/black screen on the monitor.

Of course this happens when I have work to get done, this is beyond ridiculous.

To my mind, you must check and recheck...

Apple to HDMI External Monitor Fix HACK *After Updating

:) Visit YouTube to see this title.

Thanks Kinga, this was one of the "solutions" I tried, I did get the apple boot logo but as soon as it booted, it goes black.

So I did try a small portable monitor I have that can connect via Mini HDMI,
I typically connect it via USB-C because that way it does not require a 2nd power source.

The portable monitor did show up but it was washed out. Connecting it via USB-C, it shows up with correct color/contrast.

Unfortunately, the bigger monitor the one that was working fine pre accidental security update, is still black.

Why Apple doesn't allow someone to roll back a simple security update is ridiculous.

You should try connecting to a TV via HDMI, exactly like you would connect to the external monitor. If that works, it looks like it has to be the monitor. Or try connecting anything else to the monitor. Seems unlikely, but that’s how to work this problem I think.

having problems with mine too. frequent kernel panics discrupting my everyday work life. Had changed my logic board (previously was few kernel panics everyday). but now kernel panics happen on only just certain apps like chrome and zoom.

Unless you actually take responsibility for your actions and clear the checkbox in System Preferences.

Why in the world would you use HDMI for a computer monitor? The Mac supports DisplayPort... doesn't the monitor?

Where is the checkbox to not get the update notification everyday? I already have auto updates turned off.

Why would I do HDMi? Because that is what the input is on the hub and the monitor, neither offer DP.

Your story even frustrates me and I have not experienced such issues for a good long while. This kind of thing used to happen all the time when I used my Windows based laptop a long time ago.

I'd like to know where that checkbox is too @posguy99 because I don't think there is one to disable System Software Updates notifications. There are instructions in this article about how to disable it via the Terminal app, although I haven't tried it.
