I had been wondering why the bezels on the new 15.4 inch MBP and especially the Air are so thick. The semi-scientific reason given by others on these forums seemed to be that because of the thinness of the screen and the tapering one needs the extra room on the side to attach the screen to the top case. I just compared bezel sizes with the new 17 inch MBP. Verdict:

MBA 13.3": 0.8" side bezels, 0.95" top/bottom bezel (on average)
MBP 15.4": 0.65" side bezel, 0.825" top/bottom bezel (average)
MBP 17" : 0.55" side bezel, 0.725" top/bottom bezel (average)

So, the differences aren't all that great but I still wonder why the Air's bezel couldn't have been thinner. In case of the 15.4 inch MBP my theory is simply that they didn't have a better matching LCD available.

If you disassemble the display enclosure of a 13inch mac you will see that the panel itself has such a wide bezel. Apple could not do anything about it.

But the reason why the panel manufacturers don't make it thinner...errr....maybe someone has a clue.
