Howdy,
So I'm thinking about replacing the hard drive in my MBP (2010, 13inch), and looking for a little input. I've had a bit of a search, but mostly just found "I've just put this in my computer and it's great", so was after a bit more of a long-term experience if anyone has one, as I don't want to splash the cash only to end up pissed off with the extra noise, or other weirdness.
The most demanding thing I do that'll test the drive will be music stuff in logic, it doesn't seem that hard to get the "Disk too slow?" message to come up (although quitting everything else helps). Other than that, it'll mostly be used for the usual photos, movies, games, etc.
The main things I'm looking at are:
1TB drive (probably Samsung, cheaper!), which'll spin at 5400rpm, but with a measley 8MB buffer. I'm assuming that this'll be a bit faster than the stock drive, due to the higher density platters. I reckon it'd take me a pretty long time to actually fill this up, even if I got all my crap that I'm currently storing on externals/other computers, I'd still have quite a bit of space left.
Seagate momentus hybrid drive. This would give way better performance, but possibly at the cost of more noise/heat, and less battery life. I probably coudn't fit every single bit of data I have lying around on here, but I'm fine with that, I've been juggling externals and multiple backups for a while, and could deffo get what I actually need on to it.
The seagate is probably my favoured option, as with my use so far, it definitely seems that the disk is the bottleneck 99% of the time (although the possibility of it being over a year before I have to worry about running out of space with the Samsing is attractive too) but, I have read (somewhere on here) that they can get a bit flaky after a few months use, anyone got any input on this? I think I read that it was getting better after some firmware updates, but wasn't 100% yet.
Price on the two is close enough to not be a major issue, but the jump to a full SSD is far too much £££ for not enough space at the moment, so not even considering it!
So, Macrumors, what do ya think?
Cheers!
