Big Sur = 11.6; iOS = 15.0.1. I bought my HomePods two years ago to listen to music as a stereo pair through my iMac. I set them up through whatever OS was running on my iPhone at the time. I remember setup being difficult, but I eventually got everything to work. I noticed a couple of Big Sur versions ago that its Home app could not connect to the HomePods, and for that matter neither could the app on my iPhone or iPads, yet songs still played fine through Music on my iMac. I forgot the problem until today.

I spent a couple of hours on the phone with Apple trying to get the Home apps to see the HomePods. No luck. Big Sur's Music app still plays through the HomePods fine and can be controlled through not only my iMac but my iPhone and Apple Watch as well. But I'm dead as far as updating the HomePods. Plus there is no handoff between iOS Music app and the HomePods. Any ideas for a fix? Apple was nice as always but clueless.

I finally worked through the instructions in the link above and fixed my issue. Now why Apple had no idea how to solve the issue is consistent with my recent Apple tech experience: nice folks but little help.
