I don't have any experience with other VR headsets so I had nothing to compare this to. When people brought up FOV in reviews, I thought they were just being picky and maybe comparing it to the best FOV devices on the market or something.

I had no idea it would feel like you're looking out a porthole the entire time. This is completely non-immersive. I thought it would kind of cover your view other than the very peripheral areas.

I think it's going to be the deal killer for me. Going to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong with fit/etc first. I'm using the thinnest light seal. It's almost like you just can't get close enough to the displays and see a huge amount of black around the screens.

I also haven't received my Zeiss lens inserts yet, I don't know how that's going to change things for the better or the worse.

I can see how it would be jarring. All of the VR headsets that I have ever tried, and admittedly I haven’t tried many, have all had it to some degree. I got used to it rather quickly, it only took me a couple of days, but I was an avid snow skier when I was a kid up through just after I graduated from college so it reminded me of that and I quickly forgot about it to the point that it didn’t seem strange and I was completely used to it after a few days with the device but I can imagine it would take some getting used to for somebody who has never worn ski goggles, diving goggles or something like that previously.

You’ve got 14 days to return it so try and use it as much as you can and see if after 7 - 10 days you’re not pretty much used to it. If it still seems like a deal breaker then yeah, I’d return it, but I’d give it a shot. IMO that’s why going to an Apple Store for a demo is so important if you can. I pre-ordered mine and went to the store to pick it up precisely so I could get the demo so if I hated it I could have passed on picking it up / returned it right then and there. Overall I’m glad I picked it up at the store and did the demo first so I knew what I was doing with the device when I got home and, most importantly, made sure I had the right light seal for me. I passed on ordering the lenses thinking I’d try it for 14 days then take it back and after I decided to keep it I did order the lenses and then the Store app suggested a differnet light seal. Ultimately the original light seal I got when I did the face scan without the lense option worked the best even wih the lenses so I returned the light seal I bought with the lenses that Apple suggested but in all, if you feel like something isn’t right, it is important to visit an Apple Store so if you don’t have the right light seal, band size, etc. somebody from Apple will be right there to let you swap out those accessories with a version that works the best for you but there’s no doubt it feels like you’re looking through goggles versus a completely unobstructed view of your surroundings.

I will admit, I don't like the looking thru black tubes effect.
If you are really engrossed in a game, and focussed on the game, you can forget about it, but I know that's not really a think that's done much with the Vision Pro.

There are a few headsets with vastly better FOV but they are expensive.

I will admit. Given how FOV can affect your enjoyment, I genuinely thought Apple's headset was going to be very expensive because they were going to have amazing FOV, as that's a BIG thing to be able to show off.

I have a Quest 2 and Quest 3, and thought the Vision Pro would be vastly better.
As I understand it, the Vision Pro has around the same width FOV as a Quest 3, but even worse height FOV that a Quest 3
For a device that costs 7x as much I find than unacceptable.
I'd expect it to be a considerable amount better than the Quest 3 for the price.

How’s the resolution on the VP compared to the Quest 3? I know the stats of course but, anecdotally, what do you think?

I looked into this, and it seems that the FOV isn't a fault of Apples but the technology. They are using state of the art Micro-Oled displays, and they just haven't progressed far enough yet when compared to LCD, to give a much wider FOV. Apple put in the best they could at the time, so I am sure it will get better as this technology continues to evolve.

We warned you this would happen

It’s completely Apple/Meta fault as they never show how it looks like in reality

Although the resolution on the VP is higher, Quest 3’s effective resolution is higher

Ive used the Quest 2, 3, PSVR 1, PSVR 2, and the AVP, and while my time with the AVP was limited only to the demo in store, overall I am very impressed with how good it looks. I think it would be something that you would get used to.

The FOV is the only thing that’s put me off. Is it really noticeable?
This is one of the things that shows everybody is different I guess. When I did my demo, I had the complaints about FOV in the back of my mind and I was there thinking “what are they talking about? This looks great”. I didn’t notice anything that would stop me from enjoying my self. FOV didn’t jump out at me as some huge thing. And I have a quest 3

It really bothered me at first, and over the first week I guess I just got used to it. Now, for me at least, it's a non-issue. Hopefully will get better in future versions. This can be the AVP version of "smaller bezels"!
