Having met Bill Russell several times, I knew him to be a soft spoken gentleman with a gregarious laugh and kind heart. Having been a sports fan (and especially a Celtics fan) all my life, I knew him as one of the greatest Celtics to ever lace them up and a premier athlete. I learned what he faced growing up and the adversity he had to overcome during the often hostile and racist 1950's and 60's. I am saddened to report that the world lost a very good man today. RIP Bill Russell.

With all due respect to Michael and LeBron...

Bill is still my GOAT. 11 championships, 8 in a row...

It's too hard to compare players from different eras, but I'd argue that Russell was the single most important figure in NBA history. He opened the door for black players and black coaches to follow, he revolutionized the role of the center in the game, he won titles like no one before or since — no one changed the game more than he did.

The very definition of legend.

The Celtics were my favorite team when I was a kid, even though I lived in the Midwest. I always liked John Havlicek, but Russell was obviously the linchpin of those championship teams. He was an insightful commentator after his brief stint in coaching. Always exuding class, so many looked up to him, including those who were taller. Hail and farewell Mr. Russell.
