I have an iMac running 10.7.5
There is a programme called "bin" that appears in my dock (running).
I can't quit out - even using Force quit. It simply starts up again. My Mac needs to restart to upload new software updates but it won't as it can't quit bin - I'm so far behind I can no longer connect my iPhone via iTunes as iTunes is no longer capable of supporting the phone.
I was told to do a complete back-up and load Mavericks. The trouble is, I have a WD external backup drive and WD have issued a warning that their software doesn't yet work with Mavericks and I should await an update. If my update to Mavericks doesn't go well and I'm then running Mavericks but need to reload from my backup it won't work.
I've gone into activity monitor to see if there's anything running in the root that keeps re-starting bin but to be fair I daren't start shutting applications down as I may disable the keyboard or something and then I'd be really stuffed given I can't restart the Mac! Can anyone help please?

I should just add…. I also have a Macbook Air and, on the basis that I'm moving to Mavericks on the IMac decided to upload Mavericks onto that. The App store download got to 995.5Mb and then hung and I haven't been able to persuade it to budge since. I'm not having a lot of luck!!
