Im probably moving back to NYC from Australia in the next few months. I currently have an iphone 13pro, which works fine except that the back is shattered and it doesn't have any of the "new features".
If i am going to move back, do American phones still not have a slot for a physical sim?
Is it worth it for me to update to a 16pro or 16E, or should i wait until the 17 lands. I just don't want to be stuck with a esim only American model if the 17 doesn't have a slot.

I believe that all new iPhones in the US will no longer have a physical SIM card option. Quite a move you are making in these current times.

US has been and probably will be the only iPhone market where physical SIM slot is no longer available for some years. So when you move from Australia to US, you will not be able to buy an iPhone with SIM slots unless you travel to Canada and buy one there for now.

So if that's the case, should i wait for the 17 or get the 16pro now before i leave? Is there anything possibly expected in the 17 that would be a "must have"?

You can read the same rumor articles that we can read. A "must have" for me may not be a "must have" for you.
