My friends and I are big users of the Direct IM feature in the AIM 5.x client, which allows you to send pictures and sounds directly in the chat window.

Since switching to OSX, my friends have been mad at me because we can't do this anymore (unless I start up parallels, which is sort of a pain). Are there any alternatives to this?

I'm trying to think of a web-based service that would allow for this - real time media sharing. I googled a bit and heard about something called FlickrLive but it seems that service is no longer available.

Any other recommendations?

I'm pretty sure you can do this with iChat? What exactly do you mean? AIM has always allowed for direct-connecting to send files/pictures.

Yeah as stated almost every messaging application for the mac has direct im capability. An obvious choice is iChat, located in your applications folder. Some forum users prefer a third party IM'ing application called adium. All these options should suit your needs, have fun.

:)

Well iChat sort of works sometimes but not always...plus I prefer Adium anyway.

Adium's Direct IM has never worked.

This is a similar problem to using Trillian or Gaim on Windows...Direct IM has never been fully supported or functional.
