Hi there, long time reader, first time in need of help.
Macbook, 10.4.11.
So, the other day my power went out while my WD Mybook essential 500gb was connected. The drive was NOT running at the time, or at least had no reason to be, as I was sleeping. But ever since, I cannot connect with my macbook without first connecting the drive to my windows machine (it's in FAT32), and even then connection takes several minutes. Once it's connected, though, everything runs smoothly. I can move files back and forth at normal USB 2 speeds, and I can view all files with ease. However, this changes once I open itunes. My library is storred on my external, and I'm having frequent lockups since the power outage. Constantly, iTunes gives me the dreaded spinning ball within moments of opening, usually during the 'gapless playback' check. If I x the gapless playback, things work fine, and I can play music, but only for a short time before itunes freezes again.
Thus far, I've uninstalled itunes, deleted my library, reloaded iTunes 6, and finally DLed iTunes 8, but all with no change. I used Disk Utility to repair a few errors on my internal disk and permissions, but that hasn't done the trick either.
I feel the problem may be with the drive, since it doesn't connect so often, but can't see why itunes would be the only app affected.
My last resort is the laborious task of backing up the drive to 30 or so DVDs and rewriting it to OS X Journaled, but if I can avoid it, I'd certainly like to.
Any help or similar experience stories are greatly appreciated.
