I posted the above thread Tuesday and didn't get a response but here's what's happened since:

I went ahead and did a full erase/restore, reinstalled iTunes, and upgraded to iOS 5. That seemed to get rid of whatever was showing up in iTunes as "other." For the last couple of days I've been ripping my CDs to the netbook and syncing them to restore my music. That was working out fine until I tried to move a few albums and nothing happened.

So I rebooted the netbook, changed the connection cable, and tried it again. Nothing.

I suspected it might be the files, so I tried another album. This time I got a sync message, but instead of moving the files I wanted, it selected a random number of files on my iPod (not the computer) and told me it was syncing them. I tried clicking the x button to stop whatever this was, and there was no response. Then I pulled out the iPod and get this message on my computer:

"The iPod "Justin’s iPod" cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found."

... and a message on the iPod telling me to go to iTunes for help. It gets weirder ...

I check the iPod. The files I synced on the second try are there, and so are the ones that wouldn't transfer before. Also, the artwork for about half my albums is missing.

My warranty with Apple has expired. Please, if anyone has any idea what's going on, or what I can do, tell me. This is very frustrating.
