For my MacBook Pro:

• The hard drive sounds like it powers on, but the display does not show.
• I have connected an external display – nothing appears on the external display.
• The Apple Store recommends having it shipped in for repair, though I need to back up the hard drive.

(1) Is there a way to back up the hard drive while the display to not work?
(2) For the display repair, should I ship through the Apple Store or use an Apple-Authorized repair shop?

Thank you for any help.

I'm not sure what your other options might be, but you could always take the HDD out, put it in an enclosure, make your backup, then reinstall it in the computer.

was your black screen repaired?

Hi Black Spruce, I am having the exact same symptoms with my Macbook - chimes on start and then black screen. No monitor output from the DVI port. Did Apple repair your machine? If so, what was the problem? If your so inclined to give a ball park figure of the repair that would also be helpful. Thanks.
