Black lines in Imovie?

Hi. The video clip which I am importing into Imovie HD is fullscreen, but as soon as I import it, it has big black lines on the top and bottom, like widescreen. Is there any way I can either, get the lines at the side instead so the image is full, or get rid of them all together? Thank you, I'd really appreciate any advice
