Black MacBook screen

I just got my friends old macbook and it worked earlier and now the screen is white with the folder flashing how do I get rid of it

Would I have to reinstall all the original software? But I can also hear the hard drive spinning

You would have to reinstall all of the software if you replace the hard drive. Most bad hard drives still spin even if bad. Just because it spins, doesn't mean it's bad. Before replacing the hard drive, I suggest reinstalling Mac OS X.
