The old MacBook that came in black or white? If so, I would go with black, much cooler than the white MacBook.

I've got an old model black Macbook. My girlfriend has a white one that I have used often. I like the black one better, for whatever that's worth.
Some things to think about: the black one shows fingerprints and smudges that was annoying for about a month. I bought some cleaner from the apple store and it works great. On the other hand, some of the older white macbook got discolored on the palm rest (in case you are planning on buying used). However, the discoloration issue has been fixed quite some time ago.

I have the last gen 2.4 black MB. I love it. It's much easier to take care of than my old white iBook G4 was. I loved the iBook too, though.
Its a choice between a refurb black book 2.4ghz £700 or a brand new 2.1 white book from the HE store for £618 plus a 4gb upgrade for £45.
Just wanted to compare the two side by side. I do prefer the Black model but don't like the fact it'll be a second hand one when I could a new white one for less.
Theres also a macbook pro 2.4 for £800 if it comes online again i'll probably go for it lol. Although it is over budget. Multi touch and a back lit keyboard to good to miss

Don't buy any RAM upgrades from Apple. They overprice it by several hundred dollars (pounds in your case). My blackbook came with 1 GB RAM and I upgraded to 4 GB for only $75 from a third party manufacturer. Check the forums or buyer's guide regarding RAM upgrades. As long as you're not technologically inept, this is simple to do on your own.
Just a thought...

I got a refurb black and it's new - if it's pre-owned they didn't have it for more than a week.
If you really want new (not refurb) and prefer the black, they have been discounted at Amazon.co.uk and cancomuk.com but still over £850.
