Black screen and cursor on log out?

Greetings everyone,

I have a 2017 5K iMac 1TB SSD and AMD Radeon 580 with the latest updates to Mojave. I am experiencing an issue when I need to switch to a different user account. Sometimes when I log out from any account, I just get a black screen with a cursor. I can let this sit for hours without doing anything. I need to forcefully shut down my iMac to resolve it.

Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone have any ideas?

yes I have had this on a couple macs. hard to diagnose and hard to fix. Usually involves in taking a series of steps, which may or may not solve it, bit worth doing.
