I'm running OS 10.13.6 and hadn't had any major problems with it, until Security Update 2020-002. It popped up as usual, I chose to install it, and it tried to reboot. Usually all apps will close, the desktop will disappear, and a black screen with 'Installing Software Update' will appear.

However, this time, the apps closed, the desktop disappeared, and then I was greeted with a black screen with a mouse pointer (near the top-left corner; the same place as it starts when you boot the system) and nothing else.

All subsequent reboots/shutdowns - whether trying to install the security update or not - lead to that same screen. I've left it overnight and it never gets any further.

Interestingly, 'sudo shutdown -r now' will successfully reboot the system (and -h will shut down).

The only other thread I've found with the same problem is this one, which didn't come to a solution (the OP reinstalled the whole OS). There was a suggestion to shut down in verbose mode; on my machine this flashed up 3 lines of logs and then went to the black screen again.

Code:
build_signal_reason: unable to allocate signal reason buffer.
IOConsoleUsers: time(0) 0->0, lin 0, llk 1,
IOConsoleUsers: gIOScreenLockState 3, hs 0, bs 0, now 0, sm 0x0

Any ideas?
