Black Screen

Old Macbook Pro (maybe 2009 or 2001) just had a black screen. Finally hit the power button, it restarted, but behaved strangely about dates and websites not being verified. Restarted again through the software and I noticed that the fan was working when it rebooted for a while--at least I took it to be the fan although maybe it was the hard drive.

I know this issue comes up but I wonder if there's any good understanding of it now. I was using the battery and it was at about 7% when the black screen hit.

Any guidance or advice would be appreciated.
