Blackish line about one inch wide on 13'' Macbook

It just started yesterday. There is a black vertical strip that appears on my Macbook screen. It's sort of pulsating and seems like a negative of whatever is displayed on the screen below it. Moving the Macbook or pushing the back of the screen in certain places makes it go away.

Is this expensive to get fixed? No Apple Care.

No limited warranty then either? Is it something that is present on startup or does it only appear after a period of use? Quick way of figuring out whether its hardware or not is to simply boot to your Mac OS Install DVD. Does the line appear or is it there? Hardware. If not, even after 20-30 minutes, it's software. In terms of the expense involved, it depends on if you prefer a DIY fix or if you'd like Apple to fix it with a flat-rate fee and guarantee the repair for 90 days. The flat rate repair (for systems > 1 year old and no AppleCare) in the U.S. is $299.95, before tax. Only you can decide if you want to risk fixing it yourself or someone not Apple certified, and then it costing more to repair by Apple because of damage caused trying to fix it in the first place.
