Since upgrading to Catalina and bricking my iMac (which had to have the split fusion drive rebuilt) I've had all sorts of niggly issues with Finder, including beach balling for several seconds opening new windows etc.
I had stopped using Time Machine when I found out how hard it was to delete files - I changed to a different app.
However when restoring the backed up files after the bricking episode, I realised a lot of important info was in Library (which I didn't backup!!) including Sticky Notes.
So I decided to start using Time Machine again at about the same time.
I had put all the niggles down to Catalina until yesterday when I had a kernel panic, and really odd hangs on the iMac. Did a restart in recovery mode and all looked OK. Plugged the Time Machine disc back in and it started again - to me that says Time Machine is doing something odd, not Catalina. Been unplugged for a day now and all seems well.
If your Mac starts behaving oddly, it might be worth unplugging the Time Machine disc to see if that helps!
