blank page in merged Pages document?

When I merge a 1-page letter, I get an extra blank page in the merged document. The original letter shows only 1 page in the thumbnail and in the detail at the bottom of the screen -- so, presumably, it doesn't have any extra spaces at the bottom of the letter. I don't know how to make the blank page go away. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'd show invisibles & see if there is a page or section break between the pages.
