blank screen "nothing here" message

Running Firefox 69.0 on my 2012 mini, os10.11.6

whenever i use the search window, instead of bringing up search results i get a blank white screen that simply says, "nothing here". no problem if i have the full address to input into the address window but the search window? nope.

any known fixes for this?
