Blending images and videos in iMovie HD/08 help

Hey guys, I've been messing around with both apps but i can't seem to figure out a simple way to add a picture in the middle of a video clip while maintaining the audio sync. Right now, I'm having to split the video into seperate clips and extracting audio to add to the pics i want to have in the video. I hope that makes sense. But if anybody knows an easier way of doing this, it'd help a lot because what i'm doin now is freaking tedious. thanks guys
