I was just about to record me doing something on my 4S with an old canon digi cam, and immediately noticed a blinking light above the earpiece. thats the proximity sensor isnt it?

it blinks all the time when the phone is awake.

I went and grabbed my old 3GS and it doesnt do this....

is this normal?

I cant find any info on it except this guys video. this is exactly what happens.

That is the proximity sensor. If you have Raise to Speak turned on in the Siri settings, it is always on. Some people are reporting that it is always on, even if Raise to Speak is turned off. My 4S does not exhibit this behavior.

The proximity sensor. It emits an infrared light that reflects back to indicate the phone is being held up to your ear. This disables the display during a phone call.

Oops, everyone answered at once. :)

but i dont even have siri turned on...

When i got this 4S as a replacement, i never even bothered turning siri on at all.

Should i try turning siri on, then disabling raise to speak, then turn off siri?

That would be a good thing to try.

Nope, i just tried enabling siri, turning off raise to speak. Its still blinking. Then i disabled siri again, still blinking.

I wonder if this has any kind of impact on battery life?

What you need to do us enable Siri, turn raise to speak off then turn Siri off and restart your phone.

aw man, you're the best!

I did't even do those enable/disable steps again since i already did them when i posted earlier. I just rebooted my 4s and its gone now!

I made a phone call to confirm that it does come on when you're on the phone and it came on normally, and then turned itself off when i ended the call.
