Blocking Facebook using Parental Controls on Lion

Hi, I run a store and need to stop people using Facebook (via Safari) on our demo Macs. This used to work fine but now Facebook uses a secure login (https) there appears to be no way to block it. Typing 'https://www.facebook.com' into the block list automatically changes it to 'http://https://www.facebook.com' which doesn't work.

Does anybody know of a way around this? Many thanks.

Put a sign up saying all the machines run key-loggers for security reasons, and if people use them to log in to websites they will be telling others their passwords. That would put me off.

You could edit the host file on the mac for facebook.com and just point it to the loopback ip of 127.0.0.1 That will just do nothing on those pcs.

You could block it on your router. That would block it for all devices and not just the Demo Macs.

This will work. Include facebook.com as well as www.facebook.com.

Or setup your router to use OpenDNS. You can set up blocked domains etc. It's a more complicated solution but you get a lot of control that way. Editing your hosts file is easier but you have to do it on all the machines. Setting up OpenDNS on your router covers the entire network that the router serves.

If I was customer it would give me negative impression of anti democracy (?) as to what you are not allowed to use on the site.

I would prefer to have a warning message like 'we are not responsible for any of hacking (probably not the best word to use) of personal information as you are using open network' or something similar, but I guess when people clog up others from trying out a mac, there aren't many choices.

Have your tried to just enter *facebook.com? I just tried and washable to the website into privacy on mine without issue. (I just typed the name Facebook and then on the url line I added an s after the http and then added www.facebook.com after the double slashes. You could just limit the internet access entirely. It is not like the people are getting less of a mac experience by not getting the internet. Those who want to surf will just install chrome or firefox to get the access they want.

Facebook control headache!!!!!

Hi everybody, I am a parent of tow teenagers and I am looking for away to limit access to facebook by using a "time allowed on face book" featue without closing down internet, which they need for their homework. Any suggestions. many thanks in advance.
