Well the MacPro has 6 internal SATA connections and only 4 are currently used. Apple are clearly waiting for something to use them. So maybe Blue Ray/HD DVD isn't all that far away.

They wouldn't bother with them if they were not going to find a use for them. THey are clearly live because the show up in the system profiler.

Only the Hard disks in Mac Pro are SATA, the optical drives use IDE, so some clever cabling would be needed to get it working.

Bye
Bugg*r, I thought it was too good to be true ...

Sorry G4DP, Your posting arrived when I was writing this, so maybe things are not as bad as I thought .. :)

Sorry about the double posting as well

I don't think it's that hard to get a longer SATA cable or a SATA extension cable?

nope. not at the moment.

i might get the fastmac drive and throw it in an external case, see what happens.

Bummer.

Well, it's not an American site, but there is a LG Blu Ray/ HD DVD combo drive available from Canada Computers for $270. You'll probably be able to find the same drive from an American retailer that's cheaper. I'm not quite sure if it burns or just reads though.

BIG bummer

I'm thinking about either getting a cheap dell or going all out with a new mac pro and boot camping it.

I think i've seen the american retail version of that drive, about the same price, I can post a link if people are interested. It is only a read drive for hi-def (GGC), the drive originally posted from play.com is a write drive (GGW).
