Bluetooth Mouse Not Connected

I have a Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8. I have two Bluetooth mice (one is a Microsoft Notebook 5000 that I've had about a year and the other is a Targus Laser Notebook mouse that I just bought because the Microsoft mouse quit working on me -- or so I thought). The Targus was working for a while (a very short while). Now, neither mouse works. They both appear in System Preferences but both are indicated "Not Connected." How do you get them to work and to keep working. How do I "connect" one of them?

You can try to turn off the mice, then turn on one of them.
