BluRay and DVD player app to play disk images over a network- is it possible?

I got to thinking about the possibility of the iTV being a revision of Apple TV with the iOS and it's own apps. Even if the iTV could only display 720P, could someone write an app to play networked files? As in, would it be possible, programming wise?
