Good, it's got time to work its way into the 1 Series before I change mine! I'd consider a 2 Series but I prefer the hatchback shape of the 1.

How about their bread and butter; the 3 series?? Hopefully mine will be upgradable. iDrive is atrocious.

So today I own an iPhone and buy a new bmw & shell out another $300 to get car play. Then next year I buy an Android phone. Do I then shell out another $300 for Google Auto and have the dealer install it in the car? Erasing CarPlay? Then the next year I decide to go back to iPhone........ and...........

The 2 series is also front wheel drive and totally different experience for a BMW.

Starting with the August builds, most of BMW's 2017 lineup is getting iDrive 5.0 which is required for Apple CarPlay.

The 2-series shown there is definitely not front wheel drive. Most of the 2-series, the 228i, M235i, 230i, M240i are all rear-wheel drive. I believe you're thinking of the 2-series Active Tourer, which is FWD if I'm not mistaken.
Indeed, the 2 series Active Tourer (the weird looking, 7 seater model) is the ONLY vehicle in BMWs range that comes as FWD. ALL others are rear or 4WD (xdrive).

Only if you spec Pro Media don't forget... or if a model comes with it as standard.

It's just you.
[doublepost=1470087195][/doublepost]BMW and I will talk when it comes to the new 3 Series. Until then I'll just keep my trusty '06 330xi with the Pioneer CarPlay unit.

See the 2017 3-series ordering guide here. Carplay is available.

You might be thinking of the 2-series Active Tourer like Celeron mentioned.... or the new 1-series. Neither is sold in the US though.

Yep... you have to order NAV to be able to add Carplay, which really kind of defeats the purpose I think. I don't see this being real popular option. Plus you still have to connect the iPhone over USB. No thanks.

Now, if only Chrysler would get their stuff together. (I'm looking at YOU Jeep Wrangler!)
I have walked into the local Jeep dealer and asked about CarPlay. The sales guy acted like it was a song he hated played way too many time. Jeep / Chrysler is hung up on their UConnect system. Mini dealers are also sick of hearing about CarPlay requests.

Technically, no. The 2016 and newer sDrive X1 is also front wheel drive (built on the 2 tourer and countryman platform), but only the xDrive is sold in the US.

Anyone know if this is something that can be retrofitted into older BMWs? BMW updates their iDrive software all the time, and includes bug fixes and sometimes new features. (I have a 2016 X1 without CarPlay and would like to be able to run CarPlay as well.)
CarPlay needs a touch screen, so this wouldn't just be a software upgrade.

Having said that, I'd be happy to have a new screen installed as part of a (reasonably priced) retrofit in my 2016 228i xDrive.

CarPlay is neat and obviously car manufacturers won't be too willing to retrofit into older vehicles. I wish my Honda would at least activate Siri from the steering wheel. I would be fine with that.

you don't need a touchscreen for carplay all you need is Idrive 5.0. as right now, the only BMW with a touchscreen is the 7 series.

Thanks, but I'm not seeing CarPlay as an option. What am I missing?

Of course CarPlay requires a touch screen.
