I have a large collection of texts, novels, and magazines that I want to both archive and search. That is, I want it to be like a library where, for example, I could search every item for the word "cat" and generate a list of the resulting hits which can then be viewed. Having a cover picture is good (and in fact very desired for my magazines) but I really want to have an effective search function once everything is listed in the computer.

I've been looking at several programs and think I've narrowed it down to Book Collector (by www.collectorz.com) and Delicious Library (www.delicious-monster.com).

- BC seems the best program for what I want but it seems worryingly PC rather than Mac. (I haven't - yet - downloaded the BC free trial; I plan to do that tomorrow).
DL can catalogue absolutely anything and is more versatile, but seems, from their website, not really "searchable", which is a key point for me: I don't just want a series of lists.

- How well do these Applications handle magazines: that is, getting the details of cover/contents etc via the Net if I just enter in the ISBN?

- Assuming that most of the titles are still listed somewhere on the web, can I live without a bar-code scanner that each company lists as an option to buy from their web site? (I think that I can, given their cost, but is that realistic?)

Does anyone out there have any experience with either of these programs, please?
