Bookmarking library audio books on CD

I would like to use an I Touch to listen to books. I take CD's out of the library, download to MAC (or PC) and synch to a portable. Currently mp3 but would like to switch. The Ipod and ITouch don't enable you to listed to more than one book at a time. It only goes back to where you left off in the last book.(Unless you buy the book from Audible.com which I don't want to do.) Previous books revert to beginning. Someone told me that the files can be modified to enable this but I have no idea how and am not too tech proficient.
Any thoughts?
