bookmarks disappeared in Safari

Well my cat sat on my keyboard, but everything looked fine... when I restarted the computer I lost the screen saver and my desktop reconfigured, I fixed all that but now safari is weird I lost all my bookmarks and the pages are acting strange (won't maximize minimize etc.) but most importantly I lost all my bookmarks is there a way to restore them? When I searched in finder it only shows me the ones that came installed. Any ideas? thanks
