This is sad, I liked the skeuomorphic animation. Is the "x pages left to end of chapter" gone as well? What about hiding clutter such as the status bar and home bar?

If you haven’t already, please provide feedback to Apple regarding page animation and progress bar. If they want this new animation then why not allow a toggle in settings. I’m not on the beta yet but will provide feedback.
Just sent in my feedback. I'm sure Apple will notice if enough of us complain about these regressions.

is anyone else annoyed at the change in bookmark placement? It’s now a two touch option.
I’m not on the beta but just looked at the screenshots and agree that hiding the bookmark button in a menu and adding extra steps to do basic things is stupid and will be incredibly frustrating.

We have increasingly larger screens and yet Apple insists on removing every button and hiding it behind multiple steps.

Can anyone tell me if Books uses full screen in portrait mode on a 12 or 13 pro max? Or still an insane margine space on each side :(?

What every other app on my iPhone 13 Pro Max looks like:

Really hoping iOS 16 allows edge to edge margins for Apple Books in portrait mode on iOS. Yes, I've put in a handful of feedback requests.

Oh I like this much more. It's not actually a paper book so the animation is flat either way. The old animation is thus jarring to me.

The animation ruins the immersion because it is slow and so fake that it takes my mind out of the book every time I turn a page.

I do want some movement as feedback but sliding over like this is preferred for me.

But I get some people like the fake page turn better.

I don't mind the new animation when its a single 'page' or column view, but on an iPad with 2 page/column view in landscape it feels weird seeing the entire thing slide away.

I don't mind the new animation. The skeuomorphism of page turning was pretty much eliminated everywhere else in iOS already. What I don't like is that it seems a bit jerky on my 13 Pro Max, where it's super smooth on my 4th Gen Air. No-one seems to have mentioned it so I'm guessing I've got one of those "it's only you" issues 😅

Between the flip animation and slide animation, I much prefer flip.

That said, it seems like having Reduce Motion enabled in Accessibility disables any sort of page turn animation. I like this mode much better than either flip or slide.

Design-wise I'm fine with the new page-turning animation, but the new animation is slow and laggy on my intel-based MacBook Pro...

It's slow on everything. I'm not quite sure how you get from a smooth, physics based page turn to a simple slide that is so laggy.

I’m fed up with moronic and unmotivated (not to mention BADLY implemented softaware) Apple decisions. This change is the last drop for me. The last drop of many that destroyed the pleasure of using a number of Apple’s products. I say enough is enough. No new iPad for me. I can buy a generic android tablet, thank you very much.

Since that horrible iOS 7 Apple is removing everything unique about them. While hardware is pretty great the software is getting worse and worse. But software is why I buy Apple products. It’s the soul of any electronic device. Sadly, Android is not better at anything other than customization and the number of features nobody needs.

I don’t necessarily agree with you about iOS 7 being doomsday. However I do think that Apple’s worst problem is that they have no strong competition. If Android wasn’t so fragmented and generally suffered under Google’s ADD, or if Windows Phone had stuck around long enough to mature, I don’t doubt iOS would be better

Now that iOS 16 is officially released, I can finally try the new books app. It's awful. e.g., how can I possibly know what this button means at a glance?

Well it's not actually a pile of flash cards, and you don't actually throw them off to the left. The page turn was a little bit of delight in the interface and now it's missing.

I would agree that it should be an option
