Cheapest way to go would be to buy something like a T-Amp for those bookshelf speakers. I have the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 and I've happy with them.
 
What has better sound quality: Klipsch Promedia 2.1s or M-Audio AV40s?

I think the M-audios are one of the best options. Amazing sound reference and re-production. I use them for general audio listening, watching movies and referencing audio from logic and protools. i don't mix with them just reference and some editing on them and have great low-end and mid-range output
