Why is it that when one makes a homemade boot disk it takes forever to load, while normal software loads in a reasonable amount of time-ie:<1minute

what the trick? whats the missing ingredient?
 
my Leopard disc somehow got a big scratch across it, I worry that this may render it unusable at some point- so Ive made a backup which works fine-but like Apples DU REPAIRING PERMISSIONS- takes AGES to load
