Boot drive from retail Mavericks...

Do you think that creating a mavericks USB boot drive, from the retail version due next week, will be the same awkward procedure as creating a boot drive from Mavericks GM?

It will most likely be the same. Personally I find the new system to be easier than restoring InstallESD; I had problems with that but createinstallmedia has worked every time for me.

The app Lion Diskmaker has been updated (in beta) to make a USB installer with Mavs.
