boot from external HDD

Can I boot OS X from an external harddrive via either USB or firewire?
also, can I somehow install windows xp thru boot camp on external hdd?

OSX prefers FW and just works, Windows requires USB. Instructions can be found here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/191777/

I don't think iworks so well for MBPs though since you have to remove the internal drive.
