I read a lot about it being impossible to boot from an external USB drive.

Then I decided to give it a shot with my MacBook - and it worked without any probs (except being slow) with a LaCie Brick. I just selected the USB drive under Preferences, Startup Disk and it worked,

Apple is warning against booting from a USB drive:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106474

But why not?

Is anybody else able to boot from an external USB drive? Do I risk not being able when I really need it?

Finally, how do you select which drive to boot from during startup? I am new to Mac's and have so far only figured out how to change it in the Preferences pane.
