Boot from other macbook to access HD?

Is it possible to boot a macbook from another installation whether another macbook or a mac os installation on an external hard drive?

What i'm trying to accomplish here is access the files on a corrupted hard drive.

I tried using Target Disc Mode but it wasn't appearing on the host computer.

Any help would be appreciated.
