Broken harddrive, dont wanna get a new internal one, I need to boot from external firewire. Thank ye.

As long as you've got your OS installed on the Firewire drive, it will work

Wrong, doesnt identify it when I boot up from an install disk (already has OS on it)

You put on quite a tone additionally to being short on info.

I have an iBook too, with a sometimes bad hard drive and I can quite happily boot form an external Firewire hard drive by pressing and holding the Option/Alt key right after the start-up sound can be heard.

What does happen exactly after you press that key? What is shown to you?

And what do you mean booting from an Install Disk? Is it the Disk that came with the iBook or the drive you wrote about?

Install disk???? I thought you were wanting to boot from firewire hard drive...

I'm not sure if your iBook will see the firewire drive if you boot from install disc, i've never tried.

Do you have OS installed on your firewire external drive? If yes, then procedure mentioned by spinnerlys above should work. If not, then you're screwed unless you can get your iBook to recognise the firewire drive when booting from install disc.

Install disk: Apple stuck it in, dont know why. We sent it into apple care, they said we damaged it.

Tried the ALT key, but didnt work..
