mac osx 10.5.8, have mac g5 powermac, g5, 2.5ghz quad. wont let me boot up. i did both safe modes, holding down shift key and the option while rebooting. On screen the apple emblem comes up for a second, then the screen went back thru the end of the booting. I’m trying to bring up the startup disk, but not happening. It’s been a while since I’ve been on my Mac. I can’t remember when I first downloaded the Leopard 10 version, did it come in a box or order it online? Sorry about that. Any help would be appreciated! David

It is not really clear from the description what exactly is the observed state. Does it begin booting every time you try, but then goes black? Or did it stop even turning on? If it does turn on, then: Does it boot into OpenFirmware? Does it boot into Single User mode? Did you try booting into macOS from another drive?

Yes, Baracuda

Yes, Barracuda, every time I boot it, comes on and about 15 sec, the apple appears for about 1 sec and goes black. Booting it always comes on, but doesn’t complete the opening. Yes it just boot to single User mode, I’m the only one using the computer not sure what you mean. What’s OpenFirmware? What’s try booting into macOS from another drive? I’ve an external hard drive connected to my Mac, where I load all my of pictures, music, and etc. I’m thinking my internal hardrive has limited space and has caused my rebooting problem before, but not like this consistent problem. If only my Mac would just open up and I could go into my internal hard drive and clean things up. I found today the OSX Leopard 10.5.4 software(DVD). Does that have the startup disk in the dvd? Sorry I’m a mid-novice when it comes to figure this problem. Let me ask you if I insert the dvd into computer, but how do I insert dvd if the compartment doesn’t open unless you’re in the computer itself? I’ll stop here until you reply back. There’s more questions. Barracuda look forward to your reply

Haven't seen your model G5's exact case but... On the 3,1 and 5,1 cases the superdrive door slides down from the top. Then there is a small hole for a paperclip. Pushing in a paperclip or similar will push out the tray for the DVD. Hope this helps.
(the firmware should direct it to read from the DVD drive before the HDD)

Try booting to that Leopard DVD:
Press and release the power button.
immediately hold the Eject button on the keyboard. The optical drive tray should slide open after 10 seconds or maybe a bit longer. DVD in the tray, then push the tray closed.
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off (the fans, etc, will shut off)
Press and release the power button, and hold the Option button on the keyboard.
You should see an icon for "Install OS X Leopard", or something similar to that. Click on that icon, then click on the right-facing arrow to continue with the boot.

Ok DeltaMac, I finally got into my Mac just now and have I up the install Mac OS X now. Will this disk install 10.5.4 and I will lose 10.5.8 version that’s on my computer now? What’s the correction this will solve? I did check my hard drive, 736.4MB out of 232.04GB, 10.5GB memory. I’m definitely deleting unused files.

The Leopard install will give you the choice to do an update install (which may not be available to you), or will let you do what Apple calls an archive and install. The end result (or you could call it a correction. I would just call it a fix, or a repair install) should be a system that will allow you to boot. That is assuming that the hard drive is OK, and that the OS X reinstall completes successfully.
Let us know the result that you get from the reinstall.

Can also be a failing cooling system.

One of my previous dual 2.5ghz ( non quad ) , did the same thing. I did an air cooled conversion on it and it's still running to this day.

It could be a failing power supply. You need to indentify and observe the LEDs on the Mobo and go from there.
Eriamjh1138@Dan, not familiar with the Mobo software, I can’t download much, just about every website that I go to, a pop-up appears says “unsecured connection can’t be made”

Kudos to you for keeping alive your G5 Powermac for so long. That's like 20 years worth of computational history. It was one of the computers I used in college for graphic design and it was such beaut and I actually liked the chassis so much that I bought one used from eBay back in 2014, gutted out its innards, and replaced the peripherals w/ more modern PC parts, turning it into a Hackintosh.
