When I hit option to select the operating sysem
it's two floating symbols. ive never seen it

The first is a lightening bolt in grayed out circle and the 2nd is some kind of 0 in the middle with 3 "spokes" 2 slashed ones and one solid bar


the optiosn to select an os or recovery dissapear quickly and I get that sreen.

Target disk mode

Those symbols indicate you are booting into "Target Disk Mode." Normally you would enter this mode by holding down the letter "T" when restarting. Target disk mode basically turns your computer into a hard drive that you can connect to via a firewire or thunderbolt cable (you can even boot another computer from your mac using those cables).

However, you should not be booting into target disk mode from the startup disk selector screen. Perhaps try another keyboard.
