"Boot tethering"? What is the meaning of this terminology?

I am too incompetent of a human being to use Google and need this concept explained to me by another person.

Basically, I have an iPhone 4, but it is unlocked with a Gevey and I'm trying to figure the pros and cons of upgrading to iOS5 (or attempting to).
(on iOS 4.3.3, baseband 4.10.01)

Also, I have a bad battery that doesn't last particularly long (although I'll order a new one soon), so I find myself booting up my phone more than usual.
